Gwinnett Stripers News Release
LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Braves, in conjunction with the Atlanta Braves, announced today that infielder Hector Olivera has been promoted to Gwinnett from Class-A Rome. He is set to make his G-Braves' debut tonight at Coolray Field in a 6:35 p.m. game against Louisville.
Olivera, 30, was acquired by the Atlanta Braves from the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 30 as part of a three-team, 13-player trade. Since entering the Braves' system, he has played in six games between the Gulf Coast League Braves and Rome, batting .059 (1-for-17) with a run scored.
The Cuba native signed a six-year contract with Los Angeles on March 24 and played at three levels of the Dodgers' system prior to the trade. Olivera opened the year with Double-A Tulsa and hit .318 with a home run, six RBIs and three runs scored. He earned a promotion to Triple-A Oklahoma City on June 12 and batted .387 with a double, triple, home run, RBI and five runs scored in seven games before he landed on the disabled list with a left hamstring strain on June 21. While on the DL, he played in six rehab games with the Arizona League Dodgers.
Olivera played for Santiago de Cuba in the Cuban National Series for 10 seasons (2003-11, 2013), batting .323 with 167 doubles, 96 home runs, 433 RBIs and 69 runs scored. He also played for the Cuban National Team in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics and the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
The Gwinnett Braves (66-58) continue their push for a playoff berth with the opener of a four-game series against the Louisville Bats (60-65) tonight at Coolray Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. Right-hander Sugar Ray Marimon (4-4, 3.62 ERA) will start for the G-Braves, while the Bats will counter with left-hander Brandon Finnegan (0-1, 5.79 ERA). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 FM and WSBRadio.com beginning at 6 p.m.
Thursday features the "Coolray Triple Play," as fans can purchase a four-pack of tickets with four hot dogs and four soft drinks for just $40. The offer, available only at the Coolray Field Ticket Office, is presented by Coolray Heating and Cooling. To purchase tickets, call 678-277-0340 or visit GwinnettBraves.com/tickets.
