Gulls Fall to Ontario

November 22, 2018 - American Hockey League (AHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

The San Diego Gulls fell 4-3 to the Ontario Reign tonight at Valley View Casino Center. The regulation defeat ended a seven-game home point streak from Oct. 19-Nov. 16 (5-0-1-1), tied for the second longest home point streak in club history.

Sam Steel opened the scoring with his first AHL goal 3:08 into the game. Steel has recorded points in three consecutive games (1-2=3). Selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the first round (30th overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft, Steel has recorded 1-3=4 points in six games with San Diego this season.

Joseph Blandisi extended his assist streak to three straight games (0-3=3) with the primary assist on Steel's goal. Keaton Thompson earned his second assist of the season on the goal.

Troy Terry scored for the fourth straight game and added an assist to extend his point streak to a club record 10 games. The 10-game point streak surpasses the previous club record for points in consecutive games set by Corey Tropp (Dec. 9, 2017-Jan. 3, 2018; 8-6=14) and Nic Kerdiles (Feb. 26-Mar. 18, 2016; 7-9=16). Terry has scored points in all 10 career AHL games (7-8=15), and leads San Diego scoring and goals.

Terry also now owns the longest point streak in the AHL this season and currently has the longest point streak by an AHL rookie since San Jose's Marcus Sorensen recorded a 10-game point streak from Jan. 21-Feb. 25, 2017 (6-9=15).

Terry's four-game goal streak (4-2=6) is the longest goal streak by a Gulls rookie and tied for the second-longest goal streak in club history, one game shy of tying Brandon Montour's club record five-game goal streak from Dec. 26, 2016-Jan.16, 2017 (6-4=10). Terry ranks second among AHL leaders with 1.50 points-per game, leads all AHL rookies in points-per game, co-leads rookies in goals and ranks third in scoring among league rookies.

Max Jones recorded his third multi-point game of the season with a goal and assist (1-1=2). Jones has tallied four points in his last three contests (2-2=4).

Isac Lundestrom recorded an assist, his third in two career games. Simon Benoit tallied his fifth assist of the season.

Kevin Boyle (4-3-0) made 29 saves in his fourth consecutive start.

Tonight's attendance was 6,618. The Gulls will conclude a season-long five-game homestand on Friday, Nov. 23 vs. the Stockton Heat (7 p.m.). The Gulls will host Hockey Fights Cancer on Friday to unite the hockey community in support of cancer patients and their families.

POSTGAME QUOTES

San Diego Gulls

Steve Oleksy

On the game

It's always hard. It's very hard to win in this league, especially when you play a rival like Ontario. Even when we were up 3-0, we knew we were in for a long game. It's a battle, those games are always tough against them. They came back and we tried to answer but unfortunately we fell short.

On what to take away from the game

I think the biggest takeaway is that we have to play a full 60 minutes. We come out the first 20 minutes and we played really well. In the second period we let off the gas a little bit and they capitalized. It's very hard to win at this level and if you don't put it together for a full 60 minutes, you're not going to get results very often.

Chase De Leo

On the game

They're a good team. We play them a lot. We're going to hate each other more and more every time we play each other. I liked our start. As a team we were doing the right things in the first period. We got away from our game and the structure in the second period. In the third period, I thought we were playing the way we played in the first period again. We can't let our foot off the gas in that second period and we can't get too comfortable having the lead.

On what to take away from the game

Just sticking to the structure, whether we're down 4-0 or we are up 4-0. Our game can't change no matter what the score is. No matter how the momentum switches, we have to play to our strengths and stick to the system. That's when things go our way.

On the message after the game

Sticking to the plan, sticking to the structure. When we turn pucks over and try to be too cute, that's when things go south. I think we saw that in the second period. We're going to learn from it and be better on Friday.

Head Coach Dallas Eakins

On the game

It's a tough one to swallow. It's always nice to have a three-goal lead and to let another team chip away at that is definitely not the game plan. I thought in the second period we just let the game get away from us. We let them dictate the pace and we got running around.

On what to take away from the game

It is frustrating but this is a development league and I do understand the process of going through this. As frustrating as it is tonight, this is when you learn great lessons. I think it's necessary to go through.

On Troy Terry

He came down here and he told me he had no confidence. We wanted to build that back up. We've tried to put him in a spot to succeed. He has fully invested in his development and he's been excellent. He's the poster boy of how you should take a demotion from the NHL. He's going to be a really special player and we look forward to his continued development.

On his message after the game

Stick with the game plan. It's really simple. When you have a three-goal lead, there's no use changing anything because it's working. We wanted to go out and do things by our self. When you're in a team game, it is impossible to do things by yourself.

On Hockey Fights Cancer Friday night

Cancer is a disease that affects us all. It has affected many guys in our dressing room. It affects everyone around the world. If we can just give back and try to raise some funds to fight this nasty disease, I think we're better for it.
