Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Augusta, NJ -- Righty Junior Guerrero overcame an early bout of wildness to combine with two relievers on a five-hit shutout, as the Worcester Tornadoes blanked the Sussex Skyhawks, 5-0, at Skylands Park on Saturday night.
Guerrero (1-0) struggled with his control early, walking two batters in each of the first two innings. But the veteran was able to work his way out of trouble, then settled down, allowing just a single and a walk over his final three innings of work. Meanwhile, Sussex starter, righthander Michael Rogers (0-1) was even more wild. Rogers walked two in the 1st, one in the 2nd, and two more in the 3rd inning when the Tornadoes finally broke through, using an RBI single from Scott Grimes to take a 1-0 lead. After two more walks and an RBI single off the bat of Alex Trezza made it 2-0 in the 5th, Rogers (who walked 8 in 4+ innings) was lifted in favor of righty Richard Lawyer. Lawyer allowed both inherited runners to score on a grounder to short by Francisco Caraballo and an RBI single by Rico Santana, putting Worcester up 4-0. That would be all the Tornadoes bullpen would need. Lefty Ryan Lobban allowed just 2 hits in 3 shutout innings and did not allow a ball to leave the infield in the air. The Tornadoes tacked on an insurance run in the top of the 9th on Mike MacMillan's RBI single and Closer John Birtwell finished off the shutout with a scoreless 9th inning.
Guerrero (1-0) picked up the Win and Rogers (0-1) took the Loss. The game featured 14 walks, three more than the entire walk total from both teams in the previous two games combined. All 10 of the Tornadoes hits were singles. Worcester will look to take three out of four from the Skyhawks in Sussex when the two teams play the series finale on Sunday afternoon. Righthander Eddie Pena will get the start for Worcester and he will be opposed by Sussex righty Edysbel Benitez. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05pm.
