Sussex Skyhawks News Release
Three Worcester Tornado pitchers limited the Sussex Skyhawks to five hits in a 5-0 win in Can-Am League action Saturday evening at Skylands Park.
Worcester Tornadoes starter Junior Guerrero (1-0) gave up two hits over the first five innings before giving way to reliever Ryan Lobban, who limited the Skyhawks to two hits in three innings of relief. John Birtwell came in to throw a scoreless ninth to close it out for the Tornadoes. Worcester improves to 2-1, while the Skyhawks fall to 1-2.
Worcester was led offensively by centerfielder Scott Grimes, who finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Francisco Caraballo and Chuck Jeroloman also had a pair of hits each for the Tornadoes.
Worcester got on the board in the top of the third when Grimes' single to center drove in B.J. Weed to make the score 1-0.
Catcher Alex Trezza's single to right drove in Grimes from second in the top of the fifth to extend Worcester's lead to 2-0. Caraballo came up next and chopped one to third that Sussex third baseman Jay Yaconetti couldn't handle, which scored Chris Colabello from third to make it 3-0 in favor of the Tornadoes. Rico Santana's single drove in Trezza to push the Tornadoes' lead to 4-0.
Worcester added another run in the ninth.
Sussex starter Mike Rogers gave up four runs in four innings and took the loss for the Skyhawks. Richard Lawyer came in and gave up only one run in the five innings of relief.
The teams return to action Sunday at 2:05 p.m. for the final game of the four game series. Sunday's game will feature the Applebee's Kids Run the Bases promotion.
