Green Bay Rockers News Release
Green Bay, Wis. - The Green Bay Bullfrogs took to the field on Wednesday night trying to complete a season sweep of the Kalamazoo Growlers at Joannes Stadium. However, after scoring five runs in the second inning to put them ahead by a score of 6-1, the Growlers held off a comeback attempt by Green Bay and defeated the Bullfrogs on Wednesday night by a score of 8-6.
With the game tied at one, Kalamazoo scored five times in the second inning to take an early 6-1 lead. Four straight Growlers recorded singles, while five straight Growlers added RBIs in the inning.
Kalamazoo's outburst in the inning forced Bullfrogs starter, Mike Ellenbest (Saginaw Valley State), from the game. Ellenbest threw just one inning and gave up the six runs on six hits while taking the loss for Green Bay.
After each team added a run, the Bullfrogs found themselves down 7-2 after six and one half innings of play. Green Bay would then load the bases in the final three innings of the game and score four more runs.
In the seventh inning, Johnny Bekakis (Long Beach State) scored on a sacrifice fly from Franco Guardascione (Palm Beach State College), and Brian Celsi (California) scored on a fielder's choice in the inning for Green Bay to trim the Growlers lead to three at 7-4.
The Bullfrogs nearly completed the comeback in the ninth inning after scoring two runs, while putting the tying run on second base. Both Ryan Koziol (Gulf Coast State) and Guardascione scored in the ninth inning, but Growlers pitcher Donnie Eaton (Michigan) got the final out of the game to earn the save for Kalamazoo. Eaton threw three innings on Wednesday and gave up two runs on three hits.
Shane Bryant (Purdue) relieved Kalamazoo's starting pitcher Nick Wernke (West Virginia), who left after just two thirds of an inning due to an injury, to pick up the win for the Growlers on Wednesday. Bryant threw five and one-thirds innings, giving up four hits and one run to the Bullfrogs.
The Bullfrogs will continue their eight-game home stand with game three on Thursday night. The Battle Creek Bombers will make their second trip to Joannes Stadium to begin a two-game series on Thursday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
