Grizzlies Remain Unbeaten with Wild, Walk-Off Win

Sauget, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies walked it off against the Trois-Rivières Aigles on Tuesday night at GCS Credit Union Ballpark thanks to a Clint Freeman two-run single in the bottom of the ninth, improving to 4-0 on the young 2022 season.
The three-run rally came after the Grizzlies could not hold a one-run lead in the top of the ninth inning, as the visitors from Canada scored three times to take a 7-5 lead into the bottom half before Gateway came back to win the game.
After two-and-a-half scoreless innings to start the contest, the Grizzlies struck first with a two-run home run by Isaac Benard in the bottom of the third. Just one inning later, Trevor Achenbach connected for a three-run home run to make it 5-0.
But Trois-Rivières found their offense in the top of the fifth. The Aigles' Yareb Martinez drove in Trois-Rivières' first run on an RBI single, and two batters later, Ricardo Sanchez hit a three-run home run to make it a 5-4 game.
The score remained 5-4 until the top of the ninth inning. Trois-Rivières got runners at the corners with no outs on a leadoff double and bunt single against Reed Hayes. Elliott Curtis then tied the game at 5-5 with an RBI single. Then, pinch-hitter David Gauthier and Yareb Martinez each hit RBI singles to give Trois-Rivières a 7-5 lead.
But the Gateway offense did not quit. With one out in the bottom of the frame, Benard singled to bring the tying run to the plate. After Peter Zimmermann was hit by a pitch. Jay Prather doubled home pinch-runner Cam Touchette to make it a 7-6 game. Jose Rosario was then also hit by a pitch to load the bases for Freeman, who broke his bat on a bloop single which scored Zimmermann and Prather for the 8-7 victory. The veteran first baseman also led the Grizzlies in the contest with three hits, including a double, as the Grizzlies remained undefeated.
The Grizzlies continue their series against the Trois-Rivières Aigles on Wednesday, May 18 at 6:45 p.m. Gateway's J.P. Williams will start on the mound against Trois-Rivières' Sam Belisle-Springer at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
