Gary, Ind. - The Gary SouthShore RailCats Professional Baseball Club selected two players in the Northern League Try-Out Camp Draft following the two day camp at the Kansas City Royals spring training complex in Surprise, Arizona.

The RailCats had the third selection in the draft and chose first baseman Jason Colson, a former Toronto Blue Jays prospect.

Colson played third base and pitcher at Winthrop University in South Carolina and set nearly every offensive school record. He was drafted by the Blue Jays as a pitcher and spent the 2001-'02 seasons in their organization. RailCats manager Greg Tagert liked Colson's bat and selected him as an infielder.

Colson set Winthrop University career records in home runs, runs batted in, total bases, and base hits.

He was honored with the Howard Bagwell Award for the 2000-'01 school year as the top male athlete (all sports) in the Big South Conference. He is a native of Weirton, West Virginia.

In the second round, the RailCats selected pitcher Eric Biddlecome out of Cal State University-Los Angeles. Biddlecome has not played professionally after completing his college career in 2003.

Approximately 170 players participated in the first morning session of the camp on Monday. That number was reduced to 75 for the Monday afternoon session and to 40 for a Tuesday morning simulated game.

Twelve players were selected by eight clubs in the league.

The RailCats will hold a try-out camp at U. S. Steel Yard in Gary on May 3rd. Call the RailCats for more information at (219) 882-BALL (2255).
