Gateway Grizzlies News Release

Sauget, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but gave up the early advantage in the third, and could not get their bats going down the stretch in suffering a 4-2 loss to the Evansville Otters on Sunday night at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.

After two walks and a wild pitch put runners at second and third base with one out in the first inning, Peter Zimmermann came up with a two-run double down the first base line to score Andrew Penner and Isaac Benard and put the Grizzlies up 2-0. But Evansville starter Austin Gossmann (1-1) settled in from there, and did not allow any runs while also facing the minimum amount of batters for the last six innings that he pitched.

Evansville then scored three times in the top of the third inning against Brendan Feldmann (2-2) on a two-run single by Zach Biermann and a sacrifice fly by Jeffrey Baez. The Otters then added to their 3-2 lead with two outs in the fifth inning when Biermann drove in yet another run on a two-out RBI double to center field.

The Gateway bullpen again held the line late, and the offense attempted a comeback in the late innings, getting the tying runs on base in the eighth with one out and the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Joe Riley and Logan Sawyer, respectively, shut down the rallies with strikeouts as the Grizzlies lost the series.

Gateway will next head out on a six-game road trip, beginning on Tuesday, June 7, at Schaumburg. First pitch from Wintrust Field is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
