Gateway Grizzlies News Release
Sauget, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies stumbled on Saturday night against the Joliet Slammers, getting a quality outing from Carson LaRue on the mound, but failing to provide enough run support in a 3-2 loss at Duly Health and Care Field. The loss snapped a five-game win streak, and was the club's third defeat in their last 14 games.
Joliet used a double, a two-out walk, and a two-out, two-strike, two-run single by Scott Holzwasser to go ahead 2-0 against LaRue (4-2), but the right-hander would shut down the Slammers completely over the next four innings, retiring 13 batters in a row, and finishing the contest with seven strikeouts.
In the meantime, the Grizzlies were able to scratch across single runs on two-out RBI hits by Gabe Holt, who drove in Clint Freeman in the third inning to make the score 2-1, and Abdiel Diaz, whose single in the sixth inning plated Peter Zimmermann and tied the score at 2-2.
In the seventh, however, after a leadoff double and subsequent single chased LaRue from the game, a double-play ground ball to shortstop brought in the eventual winning run, and with the Slammers ahead 3-2, Gateway could not muster a rally in the eighth or ninth innings, falling in the middle contest of the weekend set.
The Grizzlies will look to bounce back in the rubber game of the series on Sunday, July 9, in the club's final game before the all-star break. Joey Gonzalez will pitch in the contest for the Grizzlies against Slammers ace Cole Cook at 1:05 p.m. CT.
