Grizzlies drop finale to Wildthings

The Gateway Grizzlies dropped the series finale to the Washington WildThings 7-3 Wednesday night at GMC Stadium. The Grizzlies left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, when Mike Breyman flied to the wall in right, narrowly missing a game-tying grand slam.

Again the Grizzlies got down early, giving up four runs in the top of the first inning. The Grizzlies came back with single runs in the first and second to make it 4-2. Washington added another three runs in the seventh to go up 7-2. The Grizzlies managed to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but could scratch out just a single run.

David Smith started and took the loss. Smith (2-2) went five innings allowing four runs, three earned, on two hits. He walked six and struck out three. Marcus Barriger finished the game allowing three runs over four innings. He struck out two.

Ryan Sullivan was 3-4 with an RBI. Jimmy Reiter 1-5 with a solo home run. Ben Margalski drove in the run in the ninth in a pinch hitting appeance.

The Grizzlies entertain the Richmond Roosters Friday night in the start of a three-game weekend series at GMC Stadium.
