Richmond Roosters News Release
Richmond, Indiana - The Roosters won 4-3 in a strange game Wednesday night. Richmond got all four of their runs on just four hits, taking advantage of five errors by Windy City. The Thunderbolts on the other hand, got only three runs on 14 hits. Clutch pitching and timely hits earned Richmond its second win in a row and the fourth out of the last five games.
Matt Schweitzer got his sixth start of the year and pitched seven solid innings of baseball giving up only one run over 10 hits. He wasn't able to notch the win but he kept the Roosters in the game and gave them the opportunity they needed to get the victory. The Roosters scored the first runs of the game in the sixth, taking the lead on a two-run double by Hector Urena to score O.J. Garza and Alex Rybczak. The Thunderbolts made it a one run game in the top of the eighth when Jason Alcott scored on a fielder's choice putout off the bat of Justin Niefer.
The Roosters came right back however and scored a run of their own in the seventh when Tony Sanguinetti grounded into a double play with no outs that allowed Kevin White to score from third. Windy City tied the game in the ninth at 3-3 on RBI hits by Justin Niefer and Nick Johnson forcing Richmond to come up with some magic in the bottom of the inning.
Joe Cuervo led off, pinch-hitting for Nate Gravley, and hit a hard double down the left field line for a double. He then made it to third on a wild pitch by Steve Ziroli to put him 90 feet away from scoring the winning run. The Thunderbolts intentionally walked both Josh Hollingsworth and Tony Sanguinetti to load the bases with one out and bring O.J. Garza to the plate. That move would cost Windy City as Garza singled over the right fielder's head to score Cuervo and win the game.
Dan Caldwell pitched 1 1/3 innings for his first win of the year while Steve Ziroli pitched only 1/3 of an inning to take the loss. The Roosters (11-15) will attempt the sweep of the Thunderbolts (8-18) on Thursday in the final game of the series. Jared Howton (1-1, 5.40 ERA) will start for Richmond and face Ryan Dittfurth (1-2, 3.31ERA). Thursday is Cincinnati Zoo Night at McBride Stadium. Coa-Coa the Singing Parrot will be on hand as well as several Cincinnati Zoo mascots. Game time is 6:35pm (Indiana time).
