Gateway Grizzlies News Release
Sauget, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies fell into a deep early hole at home against the Washington Wild Things on Wednesday night, and could not come back in losing 10-6 to even the series at GCS Credit Union Ballpark.
The rough night started on the very first pitch of the game from Justin Ferrell (1-2) to Nick Ward, who hit a home run to right field. Later in the first inning, with two on and two outs, Ian Walters hit a three-run shot to right field, also on the first pitch by Ferrell, to make it 4-0 before the Grizzlies could come to bat. The Wild Things would also score runs in each of their next three turns at bat, on an RBI single by Ward in the second, a two-run single by Ward in the third, and a three-run home run by Hector Roa in the fourth.
Gateway tried to fight back in their early turns at bat, getting single runs in the first, third, fourth, and fifth innings, including solo shots by Zach Racusin and Cesar Trejo in the third and fourth, respectively. In the seventh, they plated two more runs on an RBI single by Racusin and a bases-loaded walk by Trevor Achenbach, bringing the tying run to the plate at 10-6, but that was as close as they got.
After the rough start, Grizzlies pitchers combined to toss five scoreless innings to finish the contest, including three from Taylor Sugg, but it was not enough as Gateway dropped back into a tie for third place in the West Division standings with the Schaumburg Boomers.
The Grizzlies will now look to win the midweek series in a rubber game against Washington on Thursday, July 14, at 6:45 p.m., with Carson LaRue getting the start on the hill for Gateway.
