Utah Grizzlies News Release
West Valley City, Utah - The Utah Grizzlies will start the second year of their high school sports marketing program Thursday, September 6 at West Valley's Hunter High School.
During the program, the Grizzlies visit select high school sports marketing classes once a week for six weeks. The first three weeks consist of power point lectures, which cover ticket sales, marketing and public relations. During the final three weeks, the students break into departments and focus on marketing a chosen Grizzlies game to their school.
"I am very excited to work with the Grizzlies for a second year," said Hunter High Sports Marketing Teacher Craig Stauffer. "I believe the program is so valuable for my students; as the lessons I teach in class are transferred to long-term memory when it is reinforced by professionals."
Grizzlies Director of Broadcasting, Media and Community Relations Adrian Denny created the program during the summer of 2006 and the team plans to visit seven high schools this season. In addition to Hunter, last year the Grizzlies also visited Alta, Jordan and Riverton High Schools.
"This is an excellent way for us to expose Grizzlies hockey to high school students, while also teaching them the aspects of sports management," said Grizzlies Senior Vice President/COO Michael Schetzel. "The reception to this program from the schools has been amazing and we are excited to begin year two."
The Utah Grizzlies of the ECHL, enter their third season in America's "Premier AA Hockey League." On May 22, 2007, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Jason Christie announced an affiliation with the NHL's New York Islanders and the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Former Grizzlies Ric Jackman and Scott Niedermayer recently won the Stanley Cup as members of the Anaheim Ducks. At the start of the 2006-2007 season, 23 former Grizzlies were on NHL rosters. 12 of those former players advanced to the playoffs.
In addition, during the 2006-2007 season, the team made over 120 community appearances, including two all-team hospital visits and over 30 elementary school assemblies; while donating nearly $120,000 in cash, tickets and merchandise to charity.
