Kimbi Daniels back for an eighth year as an Ace

September 5, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - For the eighth consecutive season, Kimbi Daniels will suit up for the Alaska Aces, having signed a one-year contract for the 2007-08 campaign.

The 34-year-old Daniels (who joins center Olivier Filion and defenseman Peter Metcalf as three of the four "veterans" allotted the Aces under ECHL rules) led Alaska in scoring for the second time in four seasons last year with 81 points, his best showing since his first year as an Ace back in 2000-01. His point total placed him tied for fifth in the ECHL scoring race, while his 63 assists was third-most in the league. Daniels, who finished second to Mike Scott in the Kelly Cup MVP voting when Alaska won the ECHL championship in 2006, enjoyed a solid postseason in 2007, scoring a pair of game-winning goals and finishing fourth on the team with 13 points (3g-10a) in 15 games. In the 12-year professional history of the Aces, he ranks third all-time in games (415), fourth in assists (260) and penalty minutes (778), and fifth in points (407) and goals (147).

Now entering his 17th year as a pro, Daniels went straight to the National Hockey League with Philadelphia out of juniors during the 1990-91 season, eventually playing a total of 27 games for the Flyers (managing a goal and an assist), who drafted him in the third round with the 44th overall pick in 1990. The year before, he punctuated a brilliant junior career as a 16-year-old by leading the Memorial Cup tournament in goals and earning MVP honors for his title-winning Swift Current team, generally considered one of the finest junior clubs ever assembled. Daniels, who was raised in Long Plain, Manitoba, but now calls Anchorage home year-round, won his first pro title in the ECHL with Charlotte in 1996 and helped lead Hamilton (AHL) to the Calder Cup Finals a year later.

The Aces will play a pair of pre-season games against Texas at Sullivan Arena October 10-11, benefiting Breast Cancer Awareness and the Alaska chapter of the American Cancer Society. Alaska opens its regular season October 23 in Fresno at 6:05 p.m. AST, while its home opener has been scheduled for Friday, November 2, at 7:15 p.m., against Florida.
