West Valley City, Utah - The Utah Grizzlies defeated the Las Vegas Wranglers 3-1 Wednesday night at Maverik Center before 7,186 fans.
"We had guys playing hockey the right way, and that's just enjoying being a pro hockey player, sacrificing and going out and working hard," said Head Coach Kevin Colley. "It's been a pretty tough stretch for a lot of guys in that locker room and we needed something to build off of. The guys should feel proud of themselves just to put their body on the line, sticking with it and competing hard."
After giving up an early goal 7:47 into the contest, the Grizzlies tied the game up at 13:28 of the first period on a Paul McIlveen power-play goal as he scored his team-leading 20th goal of the year. McIlveen took a puck off of Nick Tuzzolino's stick and fired it in. Ryan Turek also picked up an assist on the play just 25 seconds into the power-play situation.
The game stayed tied going to the third period before Paul McIlveen (21) scored his second goal of the night on the power-play at 9:38 of the frame. Justin Dowling and Mitch Wahl got McIlveen the puck after picking up a turnover deep in the Las Vegas end.
The Grizzlies killed two late penalties, including down six-on-four in the final minute to hold the one-goal lead. John Armstrong and Derick Martin dove to block two shots as the penalty expired in the game's final 30 seconds. That allowed C.J. Severyn to feed Jeff LoVecchio for an empty-net score with 13 seconds left for his ninth goal of the year.
Andrew Engelage stopped 31 of 32 in the game, including 29-straight to finish the contest and get Utah the win.
Utah won the special teams battle by going 2-7 on the power-play and 6-6 on the penalty-kill.
