Griset and Schreiber Dominate But Hot Rods Fall in Finale, 1-0
August 20, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green, Ky. - Ben Griset made his return to the rotation for the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays), and he turned in his best start yet. The left-hander yielded just one run, but unfortunately former University of Louisville star Dace Kime was just as good as his Lake County Captains (Cleveland Indians) held on for the 1-0 victory. Brad Schreiber worked the final three innings without a run, but the Captains secured the series victory.
The lone run of the game came across in the top of the fifth on an alert base-running play. Dorssys Paulino led off the frame with a double. Richard Stock then laid down a bunt, but Paulino never stopped at third base. He sprinted home for an aggressive run, giving the Captains the 1-0 lead.
Neither team created many scoring chances, as the Hot Rods put a runner in scoring position in the fourth, sixth, and eighth. Lake County also pushed runners into scoring position on three occasions, but their fifth-inning run held up.
Griset (2-7) yielded just one run on five hits. He struck out six batters, which tied a season-high and fell just one short of his career best set last season. Griset scattered five hits, and his six-inning output fell just one frame shy of his career-high of seven earlier this season in West Michigan on June 28. Schreiber relieved Griset to start the seventh, and the right-hander piled up five strikeouts in three innings while dropping his earned run average to 3.82.
Kime (7-13) established one of his best outings of the season as well. He conceded just one hit over six-shutout frames. It dropped his earned run average below five to a mark of 4.85. The combination of Justin Brantley (two innings) and Trevor Frank (ninth-inning save) completed the shutout, the second in as many nights.
The Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds) were victorious on Wednesday night, and with the other results, they re-gained sole possession of the final playoff spot while the Captains expanded their lead on everybody but Dayton and Fort Wayne. The TinCaps (San Diego Padres) won to move into a tie with the Hot Rods, two games back of a playoff spot.
The Hot Rods will have to put the tough loss behind them, as they open an equally important series on Thursday night at Bowling Green Ballpark against the Great Lakes Loons (Los Angeles Dodgers). The Loons lie one game ahead of Bowling Green. Thirsty Thursday presented by 96.7 WBVR - The Beaver will be celebrated with drink specials beginning as soon as gates open at 6 p.m. CT. The One Hitters will perform a concert after the game, and it's included with the ticket to the contest. Tickets can be purchased for half-price, and gates open up at 6 p.m. CT. For tickets and more information, fans can logon to BGHotRods.com, call 270-901-2121, or visit the Bowling Green Ballpark box office.
