Castro dazzles, but Lugs drop pitchers' duel
August 20, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Lansing Lugnuts News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, Mich. - The Lansing Lugnuts (25-33, 58-69) were blanked by the West Michigan Whitecaps (36-22, 77-51), 2-0, on Wednesday night to finish off the season series between the two intrastate rivals.
Both starting pitchers cruised, but the Whitecaps were able to break through against the Lansing bullpen in the bottom of the eighth.
Second baseman Javier Betancourt broke the scoreless tie, driving a two-out, two-run single into right field off of Lansing reliever Matt Dermody (Loss, 4-5).
West Michigan reliever Zac Reininger (Win, 4-2) stranded Lansing's Chaz Frank at third in the eighth and recorded the final three outs in the ninth.
Lansing starting pitcher Miguel Castro put together his most impressive outing with the Lugnuts so far, working seven scoreless innings on just 74 pitches.
After allowing an infield single by right fielder Wynton Bernard in the first inning, Castro retired the next 17 batters he faced, with the streak broken by a bunt single from Bernard in the sixth.
Castro worked around a hit and a walk in the seventh inning to keep the Whitecaps off the scoreboard, finishing his night with three hits allowed, one walk, and three strikeouts.
After 7.2 scoreless innings, West Michigan starting pitcher Austin Kubitza did not earn a decision in his quest to tie Lansing reliever Scott Silverstein for the Midwest League wins lead at 11. However, his six strikeouts were enough to move him into first place in the league in punch outs.
The Lugnuts return to Cooley Law School Stadium on a Labatt Thirsty Thursday, August 21st, with $2 beers, $2 sodas, craft beer specials and a postgame concert featuring Starfarm. Gametime against the South Bend Silver Hawks is 7:05 p.m. Lansing right-hander Jeremy Gabryszwski (6-4, 4.33) starts opposite South Bend righty Brent Jones (3-2, 3.05).
Tickets are available for purchase via the stadium box office, telephone at 517-485-4500 and online at lansinglugnuts.com . To sign up for Lugnuts Alerts, text LUGNUTS to 80373.
