August 20, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Dayton Dragons News Release

South Bend, Ind.-Phillip Ervin collected three different two-out, run-scoring singles and Nick Travieso became the top winner in Dayton Dragons history as the Dragons defeated the South Bend Silver Hawks 5-3 on Wednesday night.

With the win, the Dragons jumped back into the East Division wildcard lead by one game over Great Lakes, which lost to Fort Wayne on Wednesday. There are 12 games to play.

Travieso (12-5) took over the Midwest League lead in victories by earning the win, the 19th of his two-year Dragons career. The previous franchise record for career wins was 18 by Rafael Gonzalez (2005-'07). Travieso worked five and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and three runs with one walk and six strikeouts. Zack Weiss relieved Travieso in the sixth and finished the game strongly, earning his third save. Weiss struck out six over three and one-third scoreless innings, giving up three hits and no walks.

Ervin came to the plate with two outs and runners in scoring position in the first, third, and fifth innings, and delivered a hit to drive in the run in all three frames.

The Dragons trailed 3-2 in the fifth inning when Jamodrick McGruder walked with two outs, went to second on Alex Blandino's single, and scored on Ervin's line drive hit to left to tie the game. Then in the sixth, the Dragons picked up the lead when Jon Matthews led off with a triple to left-center field and later scored on Ronald Bueno's ground out. Tanner Rahier blasted a home run to left field in the seventh to add an insurance run. It was Rahier's ninth homer of the year.

The Dragons collected 10 hits as they avoided a sweep of the three-game series against the playoff-bound Silver Hawks. Along with Ervin's three-hit night, Matthews and Robert Ramirez each had two.

The Dragons (28-30) continue their six-game road trip in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Thursday night at 7:10 p.m. against the West Michigan Whitecaps (36-22) in the first game of a three-game series. Jackson Stephens (2-4, 4.10) will start for the Dragons against West Michigan's Jon Maciel (5-6, 4.22).

The next home game is Sunday, August 24 vs. Great Lakes at Fifth Third Field. The game will have a special start time of 4:00 p.m.

All Dragons games can be heard on WONE Radio (980 AM) and via the internet at wone.com and through the Dragons Mobile App.
