Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
Grand Rapids, Mich. - A two-goal deficit on Wednesday was no match for the Griffins' unbeaten streak, which reached eight games (5-0-3-0) thanks to a 2-2 tie against the Rochester Americans at Van Andel Arena.
Nathan Robinson and Derek King scored in the second period for the Griffins (25-12-7-0), who saw their sixth consecutive home game go to overtime. With the point, Grand Rapids increased its lead atop the West Division to six points over idle Chicago.
The Griffins will complete their six-game home stand, the second-longest in franchise history, with games this Friday against the San Antonio Rampage and Saturday versus the Cleveland Barons.
AHL All-Star Jason Pominville gave the Amerks a 1-0 lead during a power play at 15:11 of the opening period, taking a cross-ice pass from Domenic Pittis and beating Marc Lamothe from low in the left circle.
The visitors added to their lead with a shorthanded tally at the 16:51 mark. During a 3-on-1 break, Karel Mosovsky took a shot from the right side that deflected off Lamothe and dropped over the goal line.
The Griffins finally got on the board with 3:44 remaining in the second period, when Robinson beat former Michigan State star Ryan Miller in close with a backhand for his team-high 18th goal of the season.
Just 1:35 later, King's persistence resulted in a deadlocked score. Miller denied a shot by Darryl Bootland from the slot and appeared to have the puck under control, but King refused to give up on the play and jammed the puck across the line.
Lamothe finished with 18 saves while Miller, the 23-year-old cousin of Griffins forward Kevin Miller, made 29 stops for the Americans (20-13-6-3).
Grand Rapids was held scoreless in three power play chances, ending a streak of seven straight games with a power play goal. Also snapped was Jiri Hudler's 12-game point streak, the longest in the AHL this season and the second-longest in Griffins history.
