Grand Rapids Griffins News Release
MILWAUKEE - Both Josh Langfeld and Kip Miller scored during a shootout lifting the Grand Rapids Griffins to a 2-1 victory over the Milwaukee Admirals Wednesday night at the Bradley Center. Prior to the win the Griffins fell to the Admirals in seven consecutive contests dating back to the final game of the 2005-06 campaign.
Grand Rapids will conclude their home-and-home set with Milwaukee on Friday at Van Andel Arena. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
Langfeld opened the scoring at 13:54 of the first period on an unassisted snipe from the left dot that flew over Karl Goehring's glove. The goal stood as the lone tally of the frame while the Griffins killed off three Milwaukee power play chances.
The middle period proved uneventful on the scoreboard as both teams struggled to find their offense and combined for just 10 shots. Of those 10 shots the Admirals had the edge with six and nearly capitalized on an odd-man break late in period, but Jimmy Howard made a flashy glove save to deny the quality scoring chance.
Milwaukee notched the equalizer at 7:19 of the third during a power play. Rich Peverley fed a cross-ice pass to the top of the left circle where Sheldon Brookbank launched a rocket into the far side of the net. The tally would ultimately force overtime as the Griffins could not answer during regulation and marked the second time this season the two teams dueled into an extra session.
Despite a Milwaukee power play with 19 ticks remaining and a Bracken Kearns shot that rung off the pipe, the five-minute four-on-four session was not enough to determine a winner of the contest.
The Griffins prevailed in the shootout thanks to goals from Langfeld and Miller, while at the other end Howard denied four chances and only allowed Peverley to sneak one by. Howard had another stellar performance in the crease with 33 saves and Goehring finished with 22.
