The Wolves, the seventh seed in the Western Conference, claimed a 3-2 victory tonight over the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks, winning their best-of-three qualifying round two games to one.
This clash of division rivals presents a rematch of the 2000 International Hockey League Turner Cup finals, won by Chicago four games to two. Several members of the Wolves also played last season for the Orlando Solar Bears, who defeated Grand Rapids four games to two in the IHL Eastern Conference finals on their way to the final Turner Cup championship.
The second-seeded Griffins won the regular season series against the Wolves 7-5, including a 3-2 victory at Allstate Arena last Saturday night that clinched Grand Rapids' third consecutive division title.
Only four Griffins remain from the team that lost to Chicago two years ago: right wing Chris Szysky, and defensemen John Gruden, Travis Richards and Dave Van Drunen.
