April 11, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL) News Release
After a double-overtime win to keep its season alive, Chicago hosts Cincinnati in Game 3 tonight (7:00 CT, 8:00 ET), with a berth in the Western Conference quarterfinals on the line. Zdenek Blatny, who did not play in Game 1 of the series, scored 4:10 into the fifth period on Wednesday night, giving the Wolves a 3-2 victory. Rookie Joey MacDonald, making his AHL debut, stopped 46 Wolves shots, including 18 in OT, but the Mighty Ducks still fell to 0-3 all-time in playoff overtime games. A Chicago win tonight sends the Wolves to Grand Rapids; a Cincinnati victory pits the Ducks against Syracuse.
Reinhard Divis made 34 saves as Worcester staved off elimination with a 4-2 win over Manitoba on Wednesday. Just as in Game 1, Worcester took a 2-0 lead into the third, and just as in Game 1, the Moose scored in the first minute of the final period. But Eric Boguniecki restored the two-goal lead at 4:44 and Marc Brown iced the Cats' win with an empty-netter. Manitoba's Brian Chapman (1991) and Andre Savage (1999), as well as Worcester's Daniel Tkaczuk (2001) and Eric Nickulas (1999), are former Calder Cup champions.
AHL scoring champion Donald MacLean netted a pair of goals and St. John's scored twice while shorthanded in a 3-1 win over Providence at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Wednesday. The series now shifts to the Brampton Sports Centre for Game 2 tonight (7:30 ET, 9:00 NT). The Leafs sit one win away from their first series triumph in five years, while the Bruins are trying to avoid their first opening-round exit since 1996. Providence is playing its seventh straight series as the lower seed, winning four of the previous six.
After an off day on Wednesday, Philadelphia gets back to work tonight (7:05 ET), looking to finish off the Rochester Americans in Game 2. The Amerks reached the Calder Cup Finals in 1999 and 2000, but are in danger of their third opening-round defeat in five years. Pavel Brendl, a 2000 Calder Cup champion with Hartford, had a goal and an assist for the Phantoms in Tuesday's opener.
Utah and Houston kick off the conference quarterfinals with Game 1 of their best-of-five series, tonight at the Compaq Center (7:00 CT, 6:00 MT). The Grizzlies had a 6-5-1 edge in the teams' regular season series, with '98 Calder Cup champ Jim Montgomery tallying seven goals and 11 points in nine games against the Aeros.
