Saint John Flames News Release

SAINT JOHN, NB - The Saint John Flames today announced that two fundraising programs initiated by Flames defencemen Micki DuPont and Mike Martin together raised over $18,000. DuPont's Goals for Sight program and Martin's Auction for Cancer Research helped raise funds for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind and the Canadian Cancer Society respectively.

DuPont, having recovered from an eye injury suffered in March of 2001, approached the Canadian National Institute for the Blind at the beginning of the season with interest in drawing awareness to eye safety and raising funds for the visually impaired. The two partnered to create the Goals for Sight Program, which raised over $5,600 for the CNIB.

Martin, who's family has experienced the effects of cancer, approached the Canadian Cancer Society early in the fall with interest in helping raise funds for cancer research. Together they launched Mike Martin's Auction for Cancer Research which raised over $13,000 for the CCS.

For their efforts this season, Martin and DuPont were each recognized with year end awards. DuPont was recognized as the Flames 2001-02 HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year and Martin received the 2001-02 City of Saint John Community Service Award.

The Saint John Flames are the primary development organization of the National Hockey League's Calgary Flames and have been a member of the American Hockey League since 1993.
