Greusel/Suzuki Pitch Vipers to Victory
July 5, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers got fantastic pitching from Evan Greusel and Mac Suzuki in defeating the Yuma Scorpions 4-3 at Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma, Arizona. Greusel (5-1) started and picked up the victory throwing six innings and allowing only two runs while walking one and striking out five. Suzuki (2) recorded the save in tossing the final three innings and allowing one run while striking out three. The game was also highlighted by terrific defensive plays from Calgary's Jorge Mejia, Nelson Castro, and Dillon O'Krane. With the win and an Edmonton loss the Vipers move two games up in the Golden Baseball League's North Division standings.
For the fifth straight night the Vipers scored in the top of the first inning as Nelson Castro walked, Jorge Mejia singled, Joe Jiannetti walked to load the bases, and Drew Miller knocked in two runs with a base hit. Rick Guarno followed with a run batted in single to make the score 3-0.
Yuma got a run back in the bottom of the frame as Deivis Rivadeneira singled, moved to second base on a Jhonatan Lozada walk, and scored on a Ismael Castro two-out RBI single for a 3-1 game.
In the bottom of the fourth inning Calgary pitcher Evan Greusel accomplished a very rare feat as he recorded the three outs on only three pitches. After a fly out on the first pitch, Greusel gave up a hit on the second pitch, before inducing an inning ending 6-4-3 double-play.
The Scorpions made the game a one run affair at 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth as Carlos Arroyo singled, Carlos Villalobos doubled, and Castro plated one with a groundout.
Calgary got that run back in the seventh inning as Fehlandt Lentini doubled and scored on a Castro RBI single for a 4-2 lead.
Yuma again closed to within one run in the bottom of the seventh as Diover Avila and Reynaldo Rodriguez singled and Jose Mosquera hit a sacrifice fly for a 4-3 score.
This three-games-in-two-days series concludes with a double-header on Sunday July 5th at 6:00 PM MDT with Dallas Mahan (1-2) and Erik Dessau (3-1) toeing the rubber for the Vipers. Dessau is coming off his first loss of the season while Mahan has made 11 straight appearances out of the bullpen after opening the season with one start and has the second best earned run average on the team at 2.66.
The road trip concludes against the Orange County Flyers on Monday July 6th, Tuesday July 7th, and Wednesday July 8th with all game starting at 8:05 PM MDT.
Calgary returns home to Foothills Stadium on Friday July 10th at 7:05 PM MDT when they host the Yuma Scorpions for a three-game series including games on Saturday July 11th at 5:05 PM MDT and Sunday July 12th at 1:35 PM MDT.
