Calgary Vipers News Release
The Calgary Vipers got a complete game victory from Erik Dessau to defeat the Yuma Scorpions 3-2 at Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma, Arizona. Dessau (4-1) picked up the win going seven innings and giving up eight hits for only one earned run while not walking a single batter. The right-hander threw 90 pitches, 61 of them for strikes and faced 29 batters with which he threw a first pitch strike to 18 of them. With the victory Calgary improves to 23-13 and remains up by two games over the Edmonton Capitals for first place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division. The Vipers magic number to clinch the first half north division pennant is now down to two.
Calgary opened the scoring in the top of the third as the newest Viper Caonabo Cosme walked, Fehlandt Lentini reached on a fielder's choice, Nelson Castro singled, Jorge Mejia walked to load the bases, and Joe Jiannetti also received a free pass for a run batted in. Castro followed by scoring on a wild pitch and Drew Miller drove in one with a single for a 3-0 advantage.
Yuma responded in the bottom of the inning as Jonathan Lozada and Deivis Rivadeneira singled, Adolfo Gomez sacrificed bunted the runners into scoring position, and both scored for a 3-2 game when Carlos Arroyo reached on a fielding error by first baseman Dillon O'Krane.
This three-games-in-two-days series concludes with the back half of the twin bill as Dallas Mahan (1-2) takes to the mound for the Vipers. Mahan has made 11 straight appearances out of the bullpen after opening the season with one start and has the second best earned run average on the team at 2.66.
This ten-games-in-nine-days road trip concludes against the Orange County Flyers on Monday July 6th, Tuesday July 7th, and Wednesday July 8th with all game starting at 8:05 PM MDT.
