Armada wins back-and-forth battle

TUCSON, Arizona - A back-and-forth ballgame in Tucson saw the Armada fall behind, regain a lead, fall behind again only to pull out the game with four runs over the final two innings, defeating the Toros, 10-8, at Hi Corbett Field on Independence Day. Long Beach improved to 17-16, getting over the .500 mark for the first time June 15. After a relatively quiet first six innings, the Armada and Toros combined for 12 runs in the final three innings.

J.J. Sherrill doubled to score Steve Young and Omar Bramasco and give Long Beach a 8-7 lead in the top of the eight inning and RBI hits from Bramasco and Steve Young in the top of the ninth gave Long Beach a 10-7 advantage.

Ryne Tacker gave up a walk and two singles in the bottom of the ninth as the Toros pulled within two, 10-8, but Sean Buller came on to close the door, inducing a double play ball and a pop out to right field to preserve the Armada's seventh win in its last nine games. Buller earned his second save of the season.

Koichi Misawa (2-1) earned the win, pitching 1 1/3 innings, giving up no runs, one hit, while walking one. Jordan Muir took the loss for Tucson, giving up two runs off one hit in an inning of work.

Tucson wiped away a three-run Long Beach lead after the Fleet plated three in the top of the seventh. Rusty Jones gave up four consecutive hits to Skip Adams, Lino Garcia, Dustin Yount and Andre Marshall, all of whom came around to score to give Tucson a 7-6 lead after seven.

Long Beach took advantage of Toros reliever Jason Hanna in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs to take a 6-3 lead. Bramasco doubled to lead off the inning, and Sherrill drew a walk. Two batters later, Napoleon Calzado doubled to score them both for a 5-3 lead. Calzado then stole third and took home on an errant throw from the Toros catcher for a 6-3 Armada lead.

Armada starter Dustin Gober pitched six innings in his first start of the season, giving up three runs on eight hits while striking out two and walking one.

Long Beach catcher Andy Bouchie, who was recently named to the GBL South All-Star team, picked off four runners on the base paths in the game, while also going 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, triple, RBI and run scored. The team's other All-Star position-player Bramasco extended his hitting streak to 23 games while going 4-for-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored.

The Toros struck first as Ryan Priddy's sac fly cashed Curt Miaso for a 1-0 Tucson lead. The Armada answered in the top of the second as Josh Womack blasted his second homerun of the season.

Tucson answered in the bottom of the frame. Dustin Yount singled, and Andre Marshall tripled to bring him in for a 2-1 lead.

The Armada leap-frogged the Toros when Andy Bouchie hit his third triple of the season to score Napoleon Calzado from first in the fourth inning, and Bramasco singled to score Womack in the fifth for a 3-2 Armada lead.

Andre Marshall homered for the Toros to tie the game, 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth.

Toros starting pitcher Jason Jacome left the game after six innings, and the Fleet took advantage of reliever Jason Hanna in the top of the seventh, tagging him for three runs.

The Armada sends Jose Lima to the mound tomorrow in Tucson as the Armada and Toros play the second game of this three game series at Hi Corbett Field. The game can be heard live through longbeacharmada.com with first pitch at 7:00pm.
