Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Following a dramatic walk-off win in the series opener on Saturday night, the Victoria Seals faced off against the Edmonton Capitals in game two on Sunday afternoon. With the visitors turning to Kris Honel (3-3) on the bump, the Seals turned to Eduardo Baeza (1-6) in the right hander's eighth start of the season.
Jumping out to an early lead in the top of the first, Edmonton used a lead-off double from Marcus Nettles and a walk to Jorge Cortes for a 2-0 lead on an RBI single from Norm Hutchins, and a sacrifice fly from Joey Gomes. After Victoria's Wilver Perez cut the lead in half with a solo home run in the bottom of one, the Capitals set the tone for the rest of the game in the second frame.
A base hit from Max Poulin gave the Caps a 4-1 advantage set up home run from Jorge Cortes to start of the inning. Then, after an error to catcher Matt Kavanaugh allowed Darryl Brinkley to take first base, a single from Hutchins and a three-run blast from Gomes gave Edmonton a commanding 7-1 lead. Three straight two-out singles from Bret LeVier, Carlos Duncan and Perez gave Victoria one in the bottom half of the frame, but the Seals trailed by five headed to the fourth.
With Honel hitting Duncan with a pitch to start the inning, and a walk to Jamar Hill putting runners on first and second, Brian Rios launched his second home run of the year to pull the Seals back into the contest, and the score to 8-5. After Graham Campbell shut down the Capitals in the top of the fifth, Victoria would put together another pair of runs in the bottom of the inning when Brett Flowers and Chris Van Rossum scored after four base hits in the frame, leaving the score at 8-7 headed to the sixth.
Putting the first runner on with a walk, Edmonton again exploded for five runs in the sixth inning, using back-to-back errors from Duncan and Campbell along with a two-run shot from catcher Matt Ceriani to restore a six-run lead, 13-7 over the home side.
After leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, Victoria watched the deficit get even deeper in the seventh when Jorge Cortes hit his second home run of the ballgame to put the Capitals out front 14-7. But Wilver Perez supplied the response for the Seals, notching his second long-ball of the contest while Sergio Pedroza cashed in after a double to pull Victoria back within five.
Following a scoreless eighth frame, Edmonton capped of the scoring in the ninth inning to put the game out of reach for the Seals. The Capitals fifth home run of the game, and the first hit of the series for Darryl Brinkley, gave the visitors their seven-run lead back, and Aaron Hornostaj picked up an RBI single to score Gomes and finish off a 17-9 Edmonton win.
With the victory, Justin Jordan improves to 2-1 while Eduardo Baeza slips to 1-7 as the Capitals stay in the hunt for the North Division lead. Joey Gomes led the way for Edmonton, finishing 3-for-5 with 5 RBI's, while both Wilver Perez and Brian Rios notched 4 RBI's in a losing effort for the Seals.
The Seals wrap up this three-game set tomorrow afternoon when the Capitals return for game three at Royal Athletic Park.
