Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Opening up another three-game series against the Edmonton Capitals at Royal Athletic Park, the Victoria Seals took to the field in search of a game one victory on Saturday night. The Caps sent Chris Little (4-1) to the mound in the series opener, while the Seals countered with Roberto Sotolongo (1-1) on the mound.
Getting off to another strong start in the first inning, Victoria used a solo home run from right fielder Sergio Pedroza for a 1-0 advantage. The home side would then stretch their lead to three in the second frame, when Brian Rios picked up a lead-off single and scored on one of two Edmonton errors in the frame, while Brett Flowers reached on a fielder's choice and later crossed home on an RBI double from Wilver Perez.
With Roberto Sotolongo allowing just one base runner through the game's first four innings, the Seals stretched their lead to 4-0 in the sixth frame on lead-off base hit from Josh Arhart, followed by a double from Rios and a sacrifice fly from Flowers.
Victoria then turned to the bullpen for the seventh inning, as Travis Wade came in, but surrendered a base hit and a pair of walks to load the bases for Aaron Hornostaj. The native of Waterloo, Ontario then won an 11-pitch battle, lifting a grand slam home run to right field to knot the game at 4-4.
After Chris Bodishbaugh closed out the top of the seventh by striking out the side, Jamar Hill swung the momentum right back in the Seals' favour with his league-leading 12th home run of the year, and sixth in the last five games, to put Victoria up by two.
Following a scoreless eighth inning, it would by the Capitals rallying from behind once again in the ninth when a single from Norm Hutchins set up and game-tying home run from Joey Gomes just out of the reach of Chris Van Rossum in centre field.
With a dramatic play at the plate on a near-perfect outfield assist from Jorge Cortes ending the bottom of the ninth, Victoria would set up runners in scoring position again in the tenth. After Josh Arhart was hit by a pitch and replaced by Trevor Davidson as a pinch runner, the game-winning run advanced to second on a single from Brian Rios. After a sacrifice bunt moved Davidson to third, an error from Gomes at first base allowed the runner to score and give Victoria their second walk-off victory this week, a 7-6 final over the Capitals.
