
Greg Vanney to Join TFC

CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, December 11, 2013) - LA Galaxy Academy U-14 head coach Greg Vanney has left the club to become the new Assistant General Manager and Academy Director at Toronto FC. A defender for the Galaxy from 1996-2001 before returning to the club for his final season as a professional in 2008, Vanney original joined the Galaxy Academy in July and, serving as the U-14 head coach in their inaugural season and leading them to a 10-2-2 record. Vanney's team averaged better than three goals per game in his tenure while conceding just 15 goals in 14 games.
The Galaxy Academy's new U-14 head coach will be announced before the team returns to U.S. Soccer Development Academy play in early March.
As a player, Vanney appeared in 193 regular season games for the Galaxy, scoring 21 goals and adding 20 assists. An inaugural member of the club, Vanney helped LA reach MLS Cup three times while also leading the club to the 2000 CONCACAF Champions Cup and the 2001 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Following the 2001 MLS season, Vanney moved abroad, signing with Bastia in France. He returned to MLS in 2005, joining FC Dallas while also spending time with the Colorado Rapids and D.C. United before returning to the Galaxy in 2008 for his final season in MLS.
In addition to his club career, Vanney also made 37 appearances for the U.S. National Team, scoring once and helping his country win the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
