Charlotte Checkers News Release
GREENVILLE, SC â November 1, 2002: Greenville snapped the Checkers two-game winning streak Friday night with a 3-2 victory at the BI-LO Center. Judd Medac and Mikko Sivonen scored in the first 1:40 of the contest for a quick 2-0 Grrrowl lead, and then held on for the 3-2 victory.
"We talked to the guys this morning about how teams have been giving up early goals and late goals, and losing those games, remarked Checkers' Head Coach Don MacAdam. "Some of our guys just weren't prepared to play from the beginning tonight and because of that, we wasted a lot of great effort by a lot of guys."
After Greenville grabbed the early 2-0 lead, the Checkers came back at 2:14 of the first period to pull within 2-1 when Kevin Caulfield notched his second goal of the season off assists from Dusty Jamieson and Ryan Murray. There was no further scoring until 10:32 of the third period when Greenville converted on a power play goal from former Checker Mike Hurley for a 3-1 advantage. Charlotte, which has come back from two-goal deficits three times in their first five games to earn two wins and an overtime loss, pulled to within one at 3-2 when Jamieson fired in Caulfield's shot off the post by Grrrowl goalie Michael Garnett. Checkers coach Don MacAdam pulled starting goalie Bryce Wandler for a sixth attacker with a 1:15 to go in the game. Despite pressure in the Greenville zone, the Checkers could not secure the equalizer and the Grrrowl hung on for the 3-2 victory.
Charlotte dropped to 2-3-1 for five points while the Grrrowl improved to 4-2-2 for 10 points. The Checkers will next host the Greensboro Generals Saturday night at Cricket Arena with the faceoff set for 7:35 pm. Greenville will host the Pee Dee Pride Saturday night at the BI-LO Center in their next match.
Jamieson and Caulfield each notched a goal and an assist, with Kurt Seher and Murray earning helpers as well. For Jamieson and Murray, it was their first assists of the season.
