Adirondack Phantoms News Release

(HAMILTON, Ontario, Nov. 2, 2002) - A goal and an assist by Mark Greig were not enough tonight at the Copps Coliseum as the Hamilton Bulldogs defeated the Philadelphia Phantoms, 4-2.

Hamilton entered the game leading the AHL in fewest goals allowed (2.14) and fewest penalty minutes (18.0) per game, and stayed to form by allowing the Phantoms just two power-play opportunities. Goaltender Ty Conklin made 23 saves to help Hamilton end its two-game losing streak.

Greig recorded his third multi-point game and Neil Little stopped 29 shots for Philadelphia, which has lost three of its last four games. The Phantoms had a modest two-game road unbeaten streak snapped and fell to 7-7-2-1 all-time vs. the Bulldogs.

Hamilton struck first at the 4:44 mark of the opening period on Fernando Pisani's first goal of the year. Jarret Stoll and Marc-Andre Bergeron set up Pisani, who skated down the middle and deposited it into the lower right corner of the net.

Philadelphia evened the score at 1-1 with 9:31 to go in the first period. Andre Savage began the play by threading a pass to Greig just as the team captain approached the blue line. Greig headed in on net and placed the puck through Conklin's legs for his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead 1:25 into the second period, six seconds after beginning a 5-on-3 advantage. Jozef Balej and Tomas Plekanec worked the puck to Joni Rita, who skated across the crease and knocked in his own rebound for his seventh goal of the year. Marcel Hossa's second goal of the season then widened the gap to 3-1 at the 4:11 mark.

Philadelphia didn't go on its first power play until 11:05 of the middle period, but converted to make it a one-goal game. Greig again took a pass at the blue line and moved into the near circle while waiting for teammate Ben Stafford to get into position. Greig's cross-ice pass hit Stafford in stride and the second-year pro netted his second goal with a wrister into the top left corner.

But Hamilton bounced back and moved ahead 4-2 when Jason Ward tallied his third of the year during a flurry in front of the Phantoms net 2:24 into the third period.

Philadelphia will take Sunday off in preparation for four games next week, beginning with the team's first-ever School Day Game on Wednesday, Nov. 6 at 11:05 a.m. vs. the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. The Phantoms then travel to take on the Norfolk Admirals on Thursday before hosting Norfolk on Friday at 7:05 p.m. and Hamilton on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 6:05 p.m.

Phantoms Notes: Defenseman Dan Peters did not travel after suffering a minor concussion during Wednesday's win at Syracuse ... Greig has 10 points (6G, 4A) in nine games this season ... Defenseman Wade Skolney notched his first career point with the second assist on Greig's first-period goal.
