Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, S.C. - The Drive's offense exploded for 11 hits, two home runs and two four-run innings to conquer Rome, 11-3, for a fifth-straight win Saturday night at Fluor Field.
With the win Greenville reached six games above .500 for the first time this year.
On the night, the Drive combined for six extra-base hits, four doubles and two homers. Joe Davis led the way with a 3-for-5 performance with four RBI, two runs scored and a homer. Stephen Scott tallied three RBI on a first-inning homer. He registered the only other multi-hit effort. Christian Koss and Tyler Dearden both compiled RBI on sac flies while Cam Cannon singled home a run. Eight of the nine starters got a hit.
Dylan Spacke picked up the win in relief after tossing 3.0 scoreless innings without allowing a hit or walk. He had five strikeouts. Yusniel Padron-Artiles started for the Drive and did not factor into the decision. He tossed 4.1 innings and allowed three runs on five hits, two walks and a homer. He fanned five.
Coleman Huntley was charged with the loss after relenting five runs over 4.0 innings.
Rome got ahead quickly in the first inning on a two-out solo homer by Michael Harris II to take a 1-0 advantage.
The Drive, however, responded with a four spot in the bottom of the first. With one out, Cannon drew a walk and got to second on a Howlett line drive single to right. Davis came to plate and drove in Cannon from second on a broken-bat RBI single to right. That brought up Scott who cracked a 2-2 pitch for a three-run dinger, his third in a Drive uniform. It left the bat at 104 MPH and traveled 426 ft.
They added to their lead in their next turn at the dish. Mackenzie roped a leadoff double down the left field line that banged up against the Green Monster. He advanced to third on a groundout to the shortstop during the next at-bat. Koss then skied a fly ball to center field for a sac fly and a 5-1 lead.
Rome cut the Drive lead to 5-2 in the fourth inning on a Andrew Moritz RBI double.
The Braves tallied another run in the top of the fifth on another RBI double, this time by Michael Harris II. The home team lead, 5-3.
But Greenville got both those runs back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Dearden drew a one out walk but was forced out a batter later on a groundball by Howlett. With Howlett on first, Davis obliterated an 0-1 pitch to left-center for a two-run dinger that traveled 429 ft. and had an exit velocity of 106 MPH.
The Drive put the game away in the sixth inning behind a four-run frame. MacKenzie was hit-by-pitch to start the inning then got to third on a double by Brannen off the left field wall. Koss walked to load the bases. That brought up Cannon who singled home a run. The next batter, Dearden, hit a sac fly to the warning track in right. With Koss on third and Cannon at first, Koss came home on a wild pitch. The final run of the frame came off the bat of a Davis single to left. Greenville led, 11-3.
Game six is scheduled for 3:05 Sunday at Fluor Field. The Drive are set to throw Brandon Walter while the Braves are slated to start A.J. Puckett.
