GREENSBORO, N.C. - Two runs for the Greensboro Grasshoppers in the 1st inning set the tone for the BlueClaws who only scored one run in a 4-1 loss Thursday night.
Ryan Goetz and Austin Barnes singled and scored to begin the ballgame off BlueClaws starting pitcher Kenny Giles who allowed three runs (two earned) in 3.1 innings of a losing effort. Giles surrendered five hits and walked two in his outing and now has an 0-2 record on the season.
Greensboro won their 15th consecutive game at NewBridge Bank Park and are 19-2 there in 2012 while the BlueClaws are 5-15 away from FirstEnergy Park and have yet to win consecutive road games this season.
Colton Murray was the first man out of the bullpen to relieve Giles. He entered in the 4th inning and pitched through the 6th without allowing a run. He has tossed 14.2 straight innings with 14 strikeouts since April 18th without allowing an earned run-dropping his ERA from 15.63 to 4.71 in that time.
The BlueClaws and Grasshoppers will send a pair of lefties to the mound Friday night at NewBridge Bank Park. In Game 2 of the four-game series Ethan Stewart (0-1, 4.56) will start for Lakewood against Greensboro's Josh Hodges (2-1, 4.79). First pitch for Thursday's game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
