Greensboro pulls away for 12-1 win over Legends

The Greensboro Grasshoppers scored eight runs over the last two innings and pulled away for a 12-1 win over the Lexington Legends Wednesday at Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

James Nelson and Colby Lusignan each homered and had three hits for Greensboro. Eric Gutierrez also had three hits for the Grasshoppers.

Greensboro took the lead with a run in the third inning. Luis Pintor led off with an infield hit, moved to second base on a sacrifice by Corey Bird and to third on a ground out by Aaron Knapp. Pintor scored when second baseman Gabriel Cancel committed an error on a ground ball hit by Justin Twine.

The Grasshoppers added another unearned run in the fifth. Pintor reached second on a throwing error by third baseman Emmanuel Rivera. Bird sacrificed again, moving Pintor to third, from where he scored on a sacrifice fly by Knapp.

Doubles by Gutierrez and Jarett Rindfleisch produced another run for Greensboro in the sixth, and two singles and an error led to another run in the seventh, giving the Grasshoppers a 4-0 lead.

Rindfleisch drew a leadoff walk in the eighth and scored on a triple by Pintor. After Pintor came home on Bird's sacrifice fly, Knapp singled, and Nelson and Lusignan followed with back-to-back home runs for a 9-0 margin.

The Legends scored their only run in the bottom of the eighth on a walk to Meibrys Viloria, singles by Nick Dini and Manny Olloque and a sacrifice fly by Marten Gasparini.

The Grasshoppers came back with three more runs in the ninth. With one out, Bird walked and moved to second on a two-out single by Twine. Nelson's single loaded the bases, and Lusignan doubled to left field, scoring all three runners.

Greensboro starter Michael King (3-2) got the win. He allowed two hits and no runs in seven innings.

Legends starter Gerson Garabito (3-2) took the loss. He allowed four hits and two unearned runs in five innings.

Game two of the three-game series will be played Thursday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Box score
