Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA--The Augusta GreenJackets (41-44) won their second game of the homestand against the Greenville Drive (37-49) on Saturday night. The GreenJackets drove in three runs in an unusual ninth inning rally to beat the Drive 6-5.
As the GreenJackets entered the ninth inning, they were losing 5-3. Three costly errors by the Greenville Drive defense allowed the GreenJackets to drive in three runs. With one out and the bases loaded, Ryan Jones reached base, on a fielding error by the Drive, which drove in two runs. An interference error by the Drive placed Jeremy Sy on third base. Ty Ross then reached first on a fielding error and Sy scored the winning run.
The Greenville Drive scored three of their five runs in the third inning on Saturday night. Carlos Asuaje tripled to center field to drive in the first two runs of the night. Wendell Rijo doubled to center field immediately after Asuaje to put the Drive ahead of the GreenJackets 3-0.
The GreenJackets scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jeremy Sy hit his seventh home run of the season against Greenville's starting pitcher, Teddy Stankiewicz, on a 1-0 pitch. Gabriel Cornier drove in the second run when he doubled to center field.
The Drive scored their fourth run on a fielding error in the seventh. The team scored their final run in the eighth when Manuel Margot crossed home plate as GreenJackets catcher, Ty Ross, threw to first base on a strikeout.
GreenJackets relief pitcher Jake Smith (2-3) earned the win with one inning pitched. He issued one walk and struck out two batters. While Smith earned his second win, the Drive's relief pitcher Jonathan Aro (1-2) took the loss. In one and one-third innings pitched, he gave up three runs, issued one walk and struck out six batters.
