GreenJackets Drop to Sand Gnats In Second Game

Augusta, GA--The Savannah Sand Gnats (65-33) won the second game of the series against the Augusta GreenJackets (48-54) on Thursday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Savannah's catcher, Colton Plaia, broke the tie game with a solo home run in the ninth inning to beat the GreenJackets 2-1.

The GreenJackets lone run came in the third inning when right fielder, Tyler Horan, hit a solo home run on a 0-0 pitch with one out. The home run is Horan's fourteenth of the season, the most for any GreenJacket this year. In tonight's game, Tyler Horan went two for four with one RBI. He currently sits with a batting average of .273, the highest batting average for the GreenJackets.

It was not until the sixth inning that the Sand Gnats tied the game. With a runner on first, Victor Cruzado tripled to right-center field. Following Cruzado's triple, Colton Plaia hit a fly ball to deep right center field only to have Tyler Horan throw out Cruzado at home. This play preserved the tie for the GreenJackets until the ninth inning when Plaia hit his solo home run.

Savannah's relief pitcher, Darlo Alvarez (7-0) earned the win Thursday night. In two and inning pitched, Alvarez struck out three and did not allow a hit. Akeel Morris earned his tenth save of the season for the Sand Gnats. Augusta's relief pitcher, Ray Montero (1-4), took the loss. In two innings pitched he gave up three hits and one earned run, Colton Plaia's home run.

The GreenJackets concludes their series against the Savannah Sand Gnats on Friday, July 25, at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
