
GreenJackets Beat Tourists in First Game of Series, 6-5

Augusta, GA--The GreenJackets (12-9) bounced back from a tough series to Hagerstown, to beat the Asheville Tourists (9-11), 6-5, in the first game of the series, Thursday night. Augusta's explosive offense early in the game and the save by relief pitcher, Jake Smith, in the ninth inning secured the win.
Augusta scored two runs in the bottom of the first. With runners on first and second, Brandon Bednar singled to right field, allowing Jeremy Sy to score the first run of the night. On a ground out by Tyler Horan, Ryder Jones scored the second run for the GreenJackets.
The GreenJackets scored three more runs in the second inning. John Polonius singled to right field. After Randy Ortiz walked, he scored on a throwing error by the Tourists' Ryan McMahon. Ryder Jones singled to right field and Sy scored. A double to right-center field by Brandon Bednar allowed Ryder Jones to score the fifth run for the team.
The GreenJackets scored their final run in the third inning. Tyler Horan singled through the hole at second base. With one out, Leonardo Rojas singled to left center field and Horan advanced to third. A sacrifice fly by John Polonius allowed Horan to score.
Asheville's starting pitcher, Antonio Senzatela, struggled against the GreenJackets. In two and two thirds innings, Senzatela allowed seven hits and six runs. The Tourists relief pitching kept the GreenJackets from scoring the rest of the game.
Asheville scored one run in the second inning. After Jordan Patterson was hit by a pitch, Michael Benjamin singled through the hole at second base. Wilfredo Rodriguez singled to the pitcher and Patterson scored.
Three runs were scored in the fourth by Asheville. Again, Patterson began the inning being hit by a pitch, then Michael Benjamin singled through the hole at second base. Wilfredo Rodriguez singled to right field, allowing Patterson to score the team's second run. A single to left field by Alex Mehrten allowed Benjamin to score. With one out, David Dahl singled to center field. Raimel Tapia singled to right-center field, and Mehrten scored.
Asheville scored their final run in the eighth inning. After he singled up the middle, Michael Benjamin stole second and third. Mehrten singled to center field and Benjamin scored.
The GreenJackets, Jake Smith, earned his first save of the season. In one and one thirds inning, Smith allowed one hit, and struck out the Tourists' Michael Benjamin.
Game two of the series continues Friday, April 25th, at Lake Olmstead Stadium. It's the first fireworks show of the 2014 season presented by EDTS. GreenJackets LHP Carlos Diaz (2-1 2.51) will make the start against Asheville's RHP Alex Balog (1-2, 4.24).
