Greeneville Uses Two-Run Fifth Inning to Defeat Bristol, 3-1

GREENEVILLE - Greeneville used a two-run fifth inning to secure a sweep at home against Bristol on Wednesday as the Flyboys tallied a 3-1 victory against the State Liners at Pioneer Park.
Greeneville (23-13-1) extended its lead for the top spot in the Appalachian League West Division to 4.5 games over Bristol and Elizabethton following the River Riders' loss against Bluefield.
The Flyboys' offense would be silenced early by Bristol starter Fernando Medina, who tallied four strikeouts through the first two innings of play. The lone blemish for Medina would come with Jonathan Hogart at the plate as the Greeneville first baseman delivered his team-leading third home run of the season to make it 1-0.
Greeneville starter Cal Lambert worked around a bases-loaded situation in the top of the third inning as Bristol knotted the score 1-1 but would be unable to take a lead as all three runners were left stranded on base. Lambert scattered five hits through three innings of work as he made his first start of the season for the Flyboys.
Darius Perry opened the bottom of the fifth inning for Greeneville with a walk and would advance to second following a single up the middle from Homer Bush, Jr. A successful sacrifice bunt by Jac Croom moved both runners into scoring position. Consecutive walks allowed Greeneville to take a 2-1 advantage as Tayler Aguilar worked a free pass to score Perry.
Greeneville looked to add to its lead in the frame as Eddie Micheletti stepped to the plate. The Flyboys extended their lead as Bush, Jr. scored from third following a wild pitch to make it 3-1. Bristol escaped any further damage by getting a ground out to end the inning.
The Greeneville bullpen locked things down as relievers John Day and Kelyn Fox combined to retire 12 consecutive batters from the fourth through seventh innings. Derrick Rabb worked around a leadoff hit in the eighth inning, while Zane Robbins fanned three straight Bristol batters after issuing a leadoff walk. Robbins recorded his first save of the season, while Day improved to 2-2 on the season.
Bush, Jr., and Hogart combined to notch four of Greeneville's five hits in the contest. Kyle Karros was responsible for the other hit with a leadoff single in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Flyboys worked six walks at the plate in the contest, including four against Medina.
