Crull Homers, Doughboys Lose 9-4
July 21, 2021 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Johnson City Doughboys News Release
Jaxson Crull hit a leadoff home run, but Johnson City fell behind immediately after and dropped their second straight game to Pulaski on Wednesday night at Calfee Park, 9-4.
The home run for Crull was the Oklahoma State outfielder's first of the season, and was the first leadoff homer for the Doughboys in 2021. The solo blast was the first home run for Johnson City (12-23-1) since June 25, and was the first homer hit by someone other than Joe Vetrano since June 17.
Pulaski (25-14) got a two-homer night from their left fielder Myles Smith, who came in with only seven hits this season, all singles. Smith hit a two-run shot in the second inning and followed it up with a grand slam in the third to dead center.
Johnson City trailed 9-1 in the ninth inning, but got hits from Crull, Ricky Jimenez, and Joe Vetrano, along with sacrifice flies from Troy LaNeve and Ashton King, to plate three runs and set the final score at 9-4.
Crull, Jimenez, and King all finished with two hits apiece.
Johnson City continued their struggles with finding the strike zone, issuing eleven walks one night after doling out ten free passes. The Doughboys were only outhit 11-10, but the walks ensured the River Turtles constantly had traffic on the basepaths.
Austin Kessler shined in relief for Johnson City, throwing three strong scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
Johnson City will now return to TVA Credit Union Ballpark to begin a four-game homestand. The Doughboys will first welcome the winless Kingsport Road Warriors to town on Thursday night to begin a two-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
