Great Lakes Loons News Release
MIDLAND, MI - The Great Lakes Loons were unable to keep up with the Kane County Cougars on Sunday, who won 7-3 and handed the Loons only their sixth loss of the second-half.
The home team scored first when, in an attempt to catch Loons base runner Nick Buss stealing third, Cougar catcher Juan Nunez committed a throwing error to third that allowed Buss to come home.
With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, Kane County's Tyreace House reached base on an infield single that was met with some controversy. The ball was fielded by Bryant Hernandez and thrown to Jaime Ortiz at first for a bang-bang play. Umpire Brett Houseman called House safe, which brought Loons manager Juan Bustabad out of the dugout to dispute the call.
"It one of those things you know, I thought in the inning before Ynoa was safe and he was called out, and then I thought [House] was out," he said. "It's just one of those things, where unfortunately the next guy hits a home run, but that's baseball."
On the following at-bat, Chris Aliotti belted the home run to take the 2-1 lead. The Cougars tacked on another run in the sixth on a Jose Chrisotomo RBI-single to center.
The Loons fought back to tie the game 3-3, scoring one in the sixth on a one-out grounder and then again in the sixth on a single by J.T. Wise. But the Loons would fail to score any more, and instead watched the Cougars put up four runs in the ninth, highlighted by Rashun Dixon's three-run homer.
Josh Wall started the game on a seven-game consecutive win streak with the Loons, but took the no-decision after allowing three runs, two earned, on seven hits over six innings. Wall fanned nine Cougars and walked four before being relieved by J.B. Paxson, who pitched two scoreless innings. Steve Smith (3-3, 2.29) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on three hits in the ninth.
Outfielder Brian Cavazos-Galvez found two hits Sunday to extend his Loons franchise record to 23 consecutive games with a hit.
The Loons will play the final game of their three-game series against the Kane County Cougars on Monday. Starting on the mound for Great Lakes will be RHP Brett Wallach (5-0, 4.00) against the Cougars LHP Justin Marks (3-11, 4.81). Dow Diamond celebrates Christmas in July Monday. Fans attending the game are encouraged to bring new, unwrapped toys to the game and donate to the Farm Bureau Insurance Christmas Wishes program, which benefits underprivileged families in our community.
The Great Lakes Loons are a fourth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and members of the Midwest League. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
