South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
South Bend, IN - The South Bend Silver Hawks allowed two separate two run homers on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 7-1 in the series opener at Coveleski Stadium. Scooter Gennett and Hunter Morris provided the blasts as Wisconsin evened their record at .500 in the second half.
Early on, the two starting pitchers were matching each other step-for-step in the strikeout total. Adam Worthington (LP, 3-2) struck out the final batter of the first inning to start the K parade. Jake Odorizzi (WP, 6-1) was up to the challenge for Wisconsin, striking out the side in the bottom of the first. Worthington responded by striking out the side in order in the top of the second, and it appeared as if the pitching would dominate early.
However, the Timber Rattlers broke through with the long ball in the top of the third. Cameron Garfield was on second with two outs when Gennett homered to right-center, giving Wisconsin a 2-0 lead. It was Gennett's seventh homer this season, and he upped his RBI total to 45 with the blast.
Wisconsin added three more runs against Worthington in the fourth. Khris Davis, Hunter Morris, and Cutter Dykstra all picked up hits to start the rally, with Davis scoring on a wild pitch and Morris coming home on a passed ball. Dykstra would later score on a sacrifice bunt by Michael Marseco for a 5-0 lead.
The Silver Hawks plated their lone run in the bottom of fourth. Keon Broxton led off with his 16th triple of the season and scored on a RBI double from David Nick. Broxton's triple moves him just three shy of the Midwest League record of 19 triples in a single season. He finished with two of the team's four hits on the afternoon.
Wisconsin rounded out the scoring against Brad Gemberling (ND) in the top of the fifth inning when Morris lifted a two run homer to right field, pushing the lead to 7-1.
Odorizzi went 6.0 innings, striking out eight while allowing only one run. Indiana University product Eric Arnett (SV, 1) followed with 3.0 scoreless innings, notching two strikeouts of his own.
The two teams wrap up the series with a doubleheader on Monday evening beginning at 5:00 PM Eastern Time. Gates will open at 4:30 PM on a Pepsi and U93 Dollar Monday at the Cove. LHP Mike Belfiore (1-8, 3.93 ERA) will start game one against RHP Hiram Burgos (1-5, 5.40 ERA). RHP Diogenes Rosario (4-4, 3.57 ERA) will get the nod in game two against RHP Nick Bucci (4-4, 3.63 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 4:40 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com .
