Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
GREENSBORO, N.C. (August 17, 2014) -- Christian Stringer and Jacob Morris each hit solo home runs, but the Kannapolis offense was otherwise unable to keep pace with the Grasshoppers, which jumped past the Intimidators, 14-2, on Sunday at NewBridge Bank Park. All nine Greensboro batters hit safely as the Hoppers pounded out 17 hits, including seven doubles, to force a series split.
Stringer put Kannapolis ahead with a first inning solo home run (9), but the Hoppers responded with a 6-run second inning, ending the day for starting pitcher Robinson Leyer.
Leyer (5-9) took the loss, allow six runs on right hits over 2.0 innings, his shortest outing since April.
Jacob Morris finished 3-for-4 with an sixth inning home run (8) and his team-leading 35th double of the season, third-most in the South Atlantic League.
Coco Johnson drove in six runs for Greensboro, including a 2-run double in the second inning, a 2-run base hit in the sixth, a sacrifice-fly in the seventh, and a bases-loaded walk in the eighth. The 6-RBI game is the second-biggest individual offensive night for an Intimidators opponent this season, behind Hickory's Kellin Deglan, who drove in seven runs with a pair of homers against Kannapolis in June.
Domingo German was lifted after 2.0 innings, so Greensboro turned to Chris Sadberry in long relief. Sadberry (3-0) responded with 4.0 strong innings, allowing a run on five hits to earn the win.
The Intimidators are off on Monday before returning to action at CMC-NorthEast Stadium on Tuesday against the Asheville Tourists at 7:05 p.m. to open a 3-game series. Fans have 10 more chances to see the Intimidators at home during the 2014 season, the 20th year of baseball in Kannapolis.
