
Grants Announced from the Mud Hens Helping Hens Fund

(Toledo, OH) - The Toledo Mud Hens announced today that during the 2011 season, the Helping Hens Charitable Fund was able to award $30,000 in grants to local nonprofit organizations, providing youth with sports and recreation services.
"Helping Hens" is the official charitable fund of the Toledo Mud Hens baseball club and is administered through the Toledo Community Foundation. Angela Kwallek Evans, Program Officer of the Toledo Community Foundation and Cheri Pastula, Manager of Community Relations for the Mud Hens will present checks to the grant winners prior to the Hens game on Saturday, August 27.
**The presentation will occur on the field at 6:30 p.m.
Cheri Pastula, Manager of Community Relations for the Mud Hens said, "The Mud Hens are honored to be able to give back to the Toledo-area community, especially one that has been so supportive of us. We feel that these organizations are doing outstanding work and the Mud Hens are pleased to support Toledo-area children in their efforts to stay active."
The 2011 "Helping Hens" Grant Winners
Ballet Theatre of Toledo, Inc. - A grant was awarded to provide scholarships to eight students in need.
Central City Ministries of the Diocese of Toledo - A grant was awarded to provide grade-school students attending Rosary Cathedral and Queen of Apostles schools with sports opportunities.
International Boxing Club - A grant was awarded to support the Boxercise Program. The program offers class based training concepts that boxers use to keep fit.
Judan Judo of Toledo - A grant was awarded to provide local disadvantaged youth with judo training. This specialized training is used to assist the youth of the Toledo area in learning the discipline, skills, initiative and self-esteem required for the martial arts, and to keep the youth involved in school by providing lifestyle alternatives to drugs and gang activities.
Monroe Street Neighborhood Center - A grant was awarded to support the organization's Open Gym Program, which offers a place for young people to participate in recreational activities.
Spina Bifida Association of Northwest Ohio - A grant was awarded to send youth to Myelo Camp. Located at Camp Courageous in Whitehouse, Myelo Camp provides children with Spina Bifida the chance to experience a universal rite of childhood - summer camp.
The Lenawee County Education Foundation - A grant was awarded to purchase physical education equipment that would benefit students enrolled in the Laura Haviland Program. The program is based in Adrian, MI and supports students that possess severe emotional or other behavioral challenges.
