G-Braves, Flande Finish Tides 4-1
August 25, 2011 - International League (IL1)
Gwinnett Stripers News Release
The Gwinnett Braves washed away the Norfolk Tides 4-1 on Thursday night at Coolray Field in Lawrenceville, GA. The home team's performance was highlighted by pitching, fueled by a stellar near no-hit performance by starting pitcher Yohan Flande and another solid ML Rehab outing for Atlanta's Peter Moylan. The G-Braves (72-60) remain in second place in the International League South, pulling within 3.0 games of Durham. Gwinnett is also second in the Wild Card race by a 2.0 game margin behind both Pawtucket and Lehigh Valley. The Tides (51-80) remain in last place in the IL South.
It Was Over When: Gwinnett's Flande forged his way to the mound, uninterested in the Tides chances of hitting him. He found himself in the midst of a no-hitter in the 7th inning when he yielded a single to Norfolk RF Blake Davis, and was subsequently removed from the game to a standing ovation and a 4-0 lead.
Braves Beat:
On the Mound: Starting LHP Flande (8-8) went 6.0 IP, allowing just 1 H, 1 R/ER (let in by RHP J.J. Hoover in relief with a runner that Flande was still on the hook for) with 4 BB and 5 K's. RHP Peter Moylan had his second scoreless outing on his rehab with Gwinnett, going 1.0 IP with a BB and a K. RHP Jairo Asencio pitched a scoreless 9th inning for his 22nd save of the year.
At the Plate: Newest Braves signing Wes Helms, who was originally drafted by Atlanta 12 seasons ago, continued his Braves resurgence playing 3B and going 2-for-4 with 2 RBI. Ruben Gotay (1-for-3, played 2B) and Brandon Hicks (1-for-4, played SS) each notched an RBI.
The Opposition:
On the Mound: Norfolk starting RHP Steve Johnson (2-6) went 4.2 IP, allowing 4 R/ER on 6 H with 3 BB and 7 K's in defeat.
At the Plate: Tides 2B Brendan Harris went 1-for-3 with an RBI for the team's only offense.
On Deck: The G-Braves play game two of this four games series against the Norfolk Tides on Friday at 7:05 p.m. Gwinnett will send out RHP Randall Delgado (2-1, 4.32) against Tides RHP Rick VandenHurk (8-13, 4.58). The game can be heard on the voice of the Gwinnett Braves, WDUN 550 AM and 102.9 FM. Etc: It's a big night tomorrow evening for the final Friday game of the 2011 season at Coolray Field. Of course, it's Friday Night Fireworks sponsored by Fox 5 as TV personalities from the local station will be out in force to help the G-Braves light up the night sky after the game. During the game, the Mystery Ball Auction kicks off, giving fans a chance to bid on bags with one ball inside each that could be autographed by any number of valuable stars of the game from across the minors even to the Major Leagues. Once the game is done, families can spend the night in the Coolray Field outfield for an even full of movies and games inside your very own comfy sleeping bag you can bring to lay out in the field.
