Grand Slam Steals Victory from Birds

A grand slam by 2B Jose Rosario gave the Yankees a victory Monday night at Ripken Stadium, 7-5. Staten Island put four runs on the board in the sixth inning to seal the win. The IronBirds and the Yankees are all tied up in the series, 1-1.

Facing starter David Richardson, 1B Matt Snyder brought home the first run of the night on a line drive to centerfield for the Yankees. The Birds responded with a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the first. CF Roderick Bernadina singled LF Will Howard home, his 6th RBI of the season. SS Joel Hutter slapped a single to shortstop, allowing 2B Creede Simpson to score for Aberdeen.

Following a scoreless second inning, Staten Island tied it back up in the third DH Saxon Butler doubled to right field. 3B Fu-Lin Kuo's RBI scored Butler home. RF Roberto Ortiz's sacrifice fly to center field, gave 1B Cameron Edman his first run of the season for the IronBirds.

Aberdeen plated a run in the fifth, C Pedro Perez doubled home Dudley Leonora.

In the top of the sixth, Rosario came to the plate against RHP Sander Beck. Rosario sent the ball over left field for a grand slam. Rosario's first home run of the season gave the Yankees a two run advantage.

Rehabber, Ronnie Welty's fly ball to center field doubled Howard home in the bottom of the eighth but it was not enough for the win.

Staten Island increased their lead in the top of the ninth, Kuo capped off the scoring with his second RBI of the game. Snyder scored the final run of the night, securing the Yankee win, 7-5.

LHP Dietrich Enns (2-0) picked up the win while RHP Sander Beck (1-1) got the loss for Aberdeen. RHP David Richardson pitched a no decision in his first career start. The 3.2 innings pitched was a career high, giving up two runs and struck one.

The IronBirds and Yankees will play the final game three of their three-game series on Tuesday, July 3. RHP Mark Blackmar (1-1, 2.38) will start for the Birds while the Yankees will send out minor league rehabber LHP Jeremy Bleich.
