Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
FRISCO, TX - The Corpus Christi Hooks slammed their way past the Frisco RoughRiders and earned a 10-3 win on Friday night in front of 7,340 at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
Just over one month to the day after their frightening collision in a game played in San Antonio, Mott Hyde and Danry Vasquez returned to the lineup and contributed right away.
Corpus Christi got on the board first. With Vasquez at the plate, RoughRiders' pitcher Luis Ortiz threw a wild pitch that enabled Alfredo Gonzalez to score from third and give the Hooks a 1-0 lead.
Cy Sneed got the start for Corpus Christi and went five innings, surrendering three hits, one walk, striking out seven batters, and not factoring in the decision. He gave up a double to Andy Ibanez followed by a two-run homer by Ryan Cordell in the fourth that put Frisco out in front 2-1.
The Hooks responded quickly with two runs in the fifth. Alejandro Garcia hit into what looked like would be an inning-ending double play, but Frisco third baseman Alex Burg threw the ball away allowing Chan-Jong Moon to score. Garcia would then come in on a single off the bat of Danry Vasquez to make it 3-2.
Kyle Smith (1-5) was effective enough in relief to notch his first win of the year. He pitched three innings of one-run ball and walked one batter while yielding just two hits. Those two hits came in the sixth off the bats of Ibanez and Joe Jackson, the latter being an RBI-single to tie the game at three.
Corpus Christi jumped all over new pitcher Ryne Slack (2-2) in the seventh. The first four batters of the inning reached base, including a single by Moon to score James Ramsay and put the Hooks in front. After loading the bases, Nick Tanielu drove in Moon and Garcia was thrown out trying to come home on the play. Two consecutive walks to Teoscar Hernandez and Conrad Gregor brought in another run, forcing Slack to leave the ballgame and putting Corpus Christi up 6-3.
These events all set the stage for Mott Hyde to put the ballgame away. With the bases loaded, the Hooks' shortstop took a 1-0 offering from Jason Richman and lifted it over the fence in left-center field for his second long ball of the year. This was Corpus Christi's third grand slam of the season and its second hit at Dr Pepper Ballpark.
Gonzalo Sanudo looked strong in his second appearance with the Hooks, tossing a 1-2-3 ninth inning and fanning one batter in the process.
Corpus Christi has now taken three out of the first four in this series and will face off with Frisco for the last time in the first half on Saturday night. The Hooks and the RoughRiders engage at Dr Pepper Ballpark beginning with a first pitch set for 7:05. The pregame show commences at 6:45 on Newsradio 1360 KKTX.
