Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Gorillas bested the Odessa Jackalopes on Saturday night by a final score of 6-2, stretching their season long winning streak to four games. Dan McWhinney started in net for the Gorillas, turning aside 35 of the 37 shots he faced, and notching his third win of the season.
The first period would see the Gorillas post 17 shots to the Jacakalopes 13, but McWhinney and Odessa goalie Mike Gorman were stalwarts in net turning aside every shot they saw. It took until the 5:52 mark of period two for the Gorillas to break through, as Chris Lipsett got his 14th goal of the year to put the Gorillas on top 1-0. Nathan Ward would tie it for Odessa, with his goal at 13:47, and the teams would head to the third period tied 1-1.
Amarillo would have their biggest single period output of the season, notching five goals in the final frame, paced by Bill Vandermeer's two goals. Nate Fornataro would add a goal, along with fellow rookies David Nimmo and Grant Selinger. Brian Swiniarski would add one more for the Jackalopes, and Amarillo's four goal victory marked the biggest winning margin for the team so far this year.
With the victory, Amarillo moved to 7-13-3 and has 17 points on the year. With a loss by Rio Grande Valley the Gorillas are now just three points out of the fifth and final playoff spot in the Southern Conference.
The Gorillas have now won four straight games, and will look to increase that streak next Friday as they face the Jackalopes again at the Amarillo Civic Center, followed by a Saturday night contest against the Corpus Christi Rayz at the American Bank Center. Both games are set for 7:05 PM.
