Gorillas Team up to Help Out Youth
November 28, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Amarillo, TX - The Amarillo Gorillas announced today, in conjunction with the Central Hockey League and the Hoffen Foundation, that they have donated $1,000 to the Next Generation Church for their 'Teen Christmas' program. Every season, member teams of the Central Hockey League are provided with a $1,000 grant from the Hoffen Foundation to be given to the charity of their choice. The Gorillas are proud to support the Next Generation Church in their efforts to help teenagers in need this holiday season, through their 'Teen Christmas' program.
This Holiday season, the 'Teen Christmas' program is raising funds so that under-privileged teenagers in the Amarillo community will be provided with desperately needed clothing such as shoes and coats. Shopping for the teens takes place on Tuesday December 4th at 4 PM at the Wal-Mart located on 45th and Coulter, and Wednesday December 5th at the same location. Fifty dollars provides for one teen in need, and the Next Generation Church is hoping to provide enough help for 400 kids this year. With the donation from the Gorillas, they have enough funds to provide for 180 teenagers at this point, with donations still coming in through this week.
The Hoffen Foundation is behind the donation, with their generous offerings to the Central Hockey League and all of it's member teams. The non-profit foundation was originally co-founded by Tim Zemens, who through his experience as a cancer survivor and referee in the Central Hockey League decided to create an organization whose sole purpose was to help children in need in a variety of ways. The official website for the Hoffen Foundation (www.hoffenfoundation.org) lists their purpose as follows:
"The mission of the Hoffen Foundation is ever expanding as new areas of need come to light. The main focus is to assist children with differing diseases, disabilities and socioeconomic challenges by raising money to enhance the ability of existing organizations to provide new programs and ongoing assistance. That assistance may be in the form of toys during the holidays, clothes and educational supplies for the school year, financial assistance for medical facilities, organizations or needs, funding to support outings to stimulate children's imaginations and opportunities to engage in activities they may otherwise not experience."
Gorillas General Manager Todd Chisnell was proud to be able to give something back to the community, saying "This organization is honored to be a part of this community and we are eager to find new ways to reach out and help others. With the help of the CHL and the Hoffen Foundation we are glad to get involved with Generation Next Church and Teen Christmas in this way."
Amarillo will be presenting a check to the Next Generation Church in the amount of $1,000 this Saturday night during their home game against the Colorado Eagles. Amarillo hosts the Eagles on Saturday (7:05 start) and Sunday (6:05 start), and Saturday night will be giving out 'Stomp' bobble-heads to honor their mascot, voted three years in a row as the best mascot in the Central Hockey League. Also, fans can get 50 cent hot-dogs all weekend long at the Civic Center.
