[ RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-The New Mexico Scorpions returned home after a long road trip and head coach Randy Murphy made a trade. The Scorpions obtained forward Erik Johnson from the Youngstown SteelHounds for future considerations.
Johnson, 26, in his third year of professional hockey, arrived in Youngstown after spending his first two seasons in the ECHL with San Diego, Cincinnati and Pensacola. The 5'9" 170-pounder appeared in 15 games this season, scoring nine points (4G, 5A) and a +8 plus/minus rating. Overall, the Coon Rapids, Minnesota, native has appeared in 77 games, scoring 34 points (18G, 16A) and amassing 57 penalty minutes.
"Erik will add speed to our lineup and give us more depth at the forward position," said Murphy. "He will be used in all situations and seems very eager to play here in New Mexico."
In a separate transaction, the Scorps have sent the right to defenseman Peter Kennedy to Mississippi for a player to be named later. Murphy has also placed forward Chris Robertson on the 14-day injured reserve due to an upper body injury.
The Scorpions return home on Friday, November 30th when the Colorado Eagles make a visit to the Santa Ana Star Center at 7:15 p.m. The first 1,500 fans inside the gates will receive trading card set #3, courtesy of Turtle Mountain Brewing Company and Sandoval County.
