
Gorillas continue outstanding work in community

AMARILLO, TX â The Amarillo Gorillas of the Central Hockey League continue to be leaders in their community involvement and several high profile events brought back record numbers of, items donated.
The Gorillas fans donated more than 4,100 pounds of food for the High Plains Food Bank during the recent food drive at the end of November. Fans were rewarded with free tickets to the game in exchange for the food items.
Fans were also generous during the annual Eveline Rivers Society Teddy Bear toss as more than 800 teddy bears and stuffed animals were thrown onto the ice when the Gorillas scored their goals in a 3-1 win over the Wichita Thunder. The stuffed animals were delivered to the Eveline Rivers Society and will be distributed to needy families during Christmas.
The Gorillas also were involved with the annual Coffee Memorial Blood Center Blood Drive during a game in November. Approximately 78 people donated blood and were given a t-shirt and a ticket to the game for participating.
"We are continuing to be the leaders among professional sports franchises in the Texas Panhandle with our community involvement," said Director of Community Relations Denis J Puska. "As a 100 per cent locally owned franchise it is our responsibility to help out non-profit organizations where we can either through fund raising events like these or giving tickets as prizes for various events."
There are many other activities planned for the new year including the 3rd annual Amarillo Gorillas Coconut Bowl in support of the Muscular Dystrophy Association on Sunday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m. at Western Bowl. Gorillas players will serve as team captains to various businesses who will send teams to participate.
The entry fee is $600 and that will send one child to Summer camp. For further information the Coconut Bowl, please contact Theresa Isham at the MDA office at 359-3141.
The Gorillas are also planning a book drive in conjunction with Bell Helicopter for March. Further details will be released in the near future.
